Pillion Rider

My wife brought home a surprise at lunch time, nasi tumpang! It was my childhood favorite; the mere smell knocked me into a reminiscent daze...

Sometimes my mom would visit the morning market to replenish our fresh food supply and she would bring me and my kid brother along. On returning we would stop by a house-cum-food stall which carried a breakfast variety. I would never fail to ask for nasi tumpang, amidst all on menu.

It's really a simple dish: a cone-shaped nasi himpit wrapped together with gulai udang and some serunding ikan inside a banana leaf. I guess when rice congee is wrapped while it's steaming hot, it sort of cooks the banana leaf, imparting the leaf flavour into the rice, just like the trick with nasi lemak. The gulai udang has characteristics resembling those of gulai ikan tongkol for nasi dagang.

I haven't laid my eyes on it for ages, not even during our occasional trips home. Perhaps it's not a favorite among today food makers.

So it was really a nice surprise, although this one was a little different, it had more of everything riding inside: udang, ayam, ikan, telur dadar and serunding daging, a high-budget version maybe. Thanks Auntida for sharing your air-freighted special order.

Now my memory cells are waking up their childhood neighbors. Guess I'm gonna be in this stupor for a while!

A pleasure Mr Baker! According to my 'nasi carrier', the only place she knows to get it from is her neighbour who makes them to order only. The last time I went to KB (a couple of weeks ago), the lady was ill so couldn't bring back any. This time, I would have loved to order more kelonsongs of nasi but kesian kat the 'carrier', hence the limited portions for you guys. But there will be a few more of those 'research trips' to KB in the next year or so, so fret not.

Auntida, thanks again.
Luckily lunch was ready so I didn't think it was necessary to introduce nasi tumpang to Iman & Ehsan, hehe.
And my lucky day too coz' you don't take udang...

mama c,
bulan posa ni, maybe one agenda is to do a berbuka cookout of all the dishes we used to have during childhood or from kampung, yg jarang2 kita dapat buat/ beli kat penang sekarang eg nasi ulam (hint! hint!), bubur lambuk pantai timur style (with only seafood and no meat); gulai ikan aya (even without the nasi dagang)'; singgang tenggiri', masak tempoyak pucuk ubi; masak tempoyak ikan patin (tapi ikan patin tesco takleh dipercayai ke'halal'an, so how?)....or simply ikan kembong bakar/ rebus tawar cicah kicap ngan cili padi. Yum...Yum!

teesh,
nasi tumpang ada kat kelantan saja. itu pun dah hampir pupus sekarang. rasanya tak susah sgt nak buat; maybe after 10 or 100 attempts akan jadi!

mamachupan,
dah try tapi tak pernah jumpa resipi on the net. maybe kalau request cukup kuat i akan cuba buat, knowing the aspiring chef i am... :)
and fav dish... that could be just the title to my next entry!

auntida,
you know any place i can get ragi from? dah lama nak try buat tapai ubi tapi tak ada ragi. dah try guna yeast tapi tak jadi...
pernah try tapai ubi goreng in kb?

Sorry, mr baker, tak tau la kat mana nak cari ragi. nanti i tanya mr eat-bread or his mom. kemungkinan depa tau. or mungkin you boleh tanya kat kedai raju. you know what, masa i kecik dulu father i selalu beli ragi untuk bagi makan bubuk yg dia bela dalam botol horlicks besar. ragi tu warna putih, round and leper. bila tengok rasa macam nak makan sbb nampak macam something sweet. My father bela bubuk coz kununnya boleh jadi ubat. Tatau untuk sakit apa. And i tak pernah pun tengok father i guna bubuk tu. Last2 rasanya buang jek.

one more thing, kalau you berjaya mencari ragi dan buat tapai ubi, mr eat-bread akan jadi pelanggan pertama dan setia you. semoga berjaya.

Mr Baker, Mr eat-bread is so excited with your tapai ubi project he said he is going to buy you the ragi himself. He knows where to get some.

Mohonlah maaf sesama suami dan isteri. 3. Mohonlah maaf dari keluarga, sahabat handai dan mereka yang berada di sekelilingmu".
